The Journey:
In October of 2020, Jasy Donald, a radiant 14-year-old was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure. Just one week prior, she was playing her favorite sport, volleyball, for Daniel High School. For the next year, she endured nightly dialysis, 14 surgeries, painful days and nights, isolation, and lengthy hospital stays. She was even medically airlifted from Greenville to MUSC in Charleston with her heart only functioning less than 10%. And through it all, Jasy shined the light of Jesus to everyone she met.
In June of 2021, some teammates and their families wanted to show Jasy and her family our support. So we launched Jasy's Journey Volleyball Tourney (JJVT). And the volleyball community responded in a big way! 60 teams played. The event far exceeded our three goals of showing Jasy and her family our love and support, supporting them financially, and creating a fun and worthwhile event for the community. Jasy was able to attend. In fact, she was the last one to walk off the field that night.
October, 2021: God wasn’t done with her journey yet! After getting her body healthier and ready to receive her new kidney, she got the call--God provided Jasy a new kidney. Not just any kidney either, a perfect kidney! Jasy left the hospital with her one kidney working better than most people’s two kidneys! Not knowing at the time who her Angel kidney donor was, she named him "Charlie”.
(She would later learn about Ben.)
At JJVT 2022, Jasy and her new kidney (named Charlie) joined in the action. It was awesome to see Jasy playing volleyball again. Her team name? Charlie's Angels of course! She had such a good time playing with her team and supporting all the teams in attendance. It was a blessing in itself seeing her able to enjoy the sport that she loves so much! Funds raised went to support Jasy's Son in the Storm ministry--sending care packages to children in hospitals.
In 2023, Jasy met Ben's family for the first time. (Ben was Jasy's kidney donor.) We all met his precious family and hugged their necks as we thanked them again, this time in person for the selfless gift that they bestowed upon Jasy. We have prayed specifically for this even before we knew who Jasy's donor would be. It was a day we will never forget! Proceeds were split between Son in the Storm and Ben's Brown Bag Ministry.
2024 was another awesome night. We grew to 78 teams. Full recap coming soon.
Once again in 2025, we will be raising funds to support some great causes: Son in the Storm, Ronald McDonald House, Ben's Brown Bag Ministry.
(This was a billboard from 2021. While Jasy is no longer awaiting a kidney, others are still waiting. Please consider saying "yes".)
